WHY DO WE MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS?

PART 1

We make the Sign of the Cross before meals, after meals, before going to sleep at night and upon rising in the morning.  During the Divine Liturgy we make the sign of the cross about thirty times.  People who are not Catholic or Orthodox in faith often question why we make the sign of the cross.  Since they don’t understand the meaning of the cross, they look upon it as a superstition. Why do we do this?

The sign of the cross is one of the most ancient and universal traditions of the Church, even though it is not specifically mentioned in the Bible.  The sign of the cross was made from very early times, but there was no standard way to make it.  By the 700’s, the custom  of making the sign of the cross as we still do today became the standard for all Christians in the East and West. The Latin Church or Western Church changed in the 11th Century.
